This was helpful! To try and help more, I agree with the change 'put all his head in an auld rusty pot', which means there was no blood. In that case, I've also always heard "...like a sheep he was bleatin'..."

This makes more sense to me. The tinker was making such a ruckus that you'd think he'd been killed.
