This year I ruthlessly pruned back a huge bluegreen juniper at the foot of the front yard - it was a huge blob that encroached on about 1/4 of the driveway. It was a microclimate for reptiles and small mammals. But it was too big and full of bagworms, so I cut until a shape revealed itself, like a statue emerging from a block of marble. When the juniper was smaller I used to put strings of lights on it, when it got so large I sometimes draped them on the front side of it. This year I will artistically string lights, if I still have any. I got rid of a lot of them last year because all of the pine trees are too large to decorate myself with lights. I only do one woody plant in the yard, as an accent, and to generally participate with the neighbors who put up lights as a neighborhood thing.
