One thing I don't see here is the theory that many of the American versions are meant to be commentaries of Andrew Jackson's courtship. The couplet "Not without my uncle rat's consent, I wouldn't marry the President" is believed to be a direct reference. At the time of the courtship, I believe one of them was still married to someone else.
