The "leading edge" is the tip of the thread as it comes off the spool, before you cut your piece of thread.

There are two main ways that sewing thread is wound onto spools, S twist and Z twist. Modern sewing machines usually have two spool pins, one vertical and one horizontal (my vintage machines have one vertical pin) and which pin you use depends on whether your thread is S or Z twist.
