I'd say synesthesia was a species of hallucination--well, unless only some synesthesia is hallucinatory, and some is simply perception: e.g. sound waves are actually visible to some people, or light waves audible.

But even then, hallucinations and synesthesia would intersect; synesthesia wouldn't be generic, would it?

Or did I misunderstand the question?
