As I understand it, the Hurdy Gurdy was once seen as the instrument of the Devil because it has two soundposts. The French/Italians describe the soundpost as the "soul" (because of it's fundamental effect on the tone of an instrument). Obviously, you can't have two souls.... Hence the Hurdy Gurdy was cast out of use in French Cathedrals etc.

Strange that they felt they needed an excuse...!
