I think threads generally should stay on topic and that contributions should be relevant to the OP's title, particularly if a particular song is being discussed. It's easy enough to start a new thread if you want to stray off topic. If a thread is obviously not started to give or seek information then free-for-all is fine.

I will sometimes throw in something inane/witty/rude/ridiculous if the thread is already heading that way.
