One benefit of cars that turn their lights on automatically is that you get fewer drivers driving without lights after dark, which I would suggest is a greater problem.

I have owned 2 Volvo's and 2 Saab's all of which automatically put light on all the time. The car I have now switches it's own lights on when the light available falls below a certain level.

I don't find that cars having lights on during the daytime a problem, even if they are badly adjusted, a far different story at night though.
