The people onsite are looking at surface caves, dolines and openings above the suspected position of the trapped boys. That suggests a karst landscape. i.e.limestone. Limestone can be hard or soft and contain varying amounts of clay or silt. Cave systems only develop in limestones, and to a far lesser extent in dolomite, marble, and gypsum. They are solutional features.
