Even by 1790 there were lots of widely varying versions. In the earliest dated copy I have (1794) by Evans of London, the soldiers were leaving Limerick where they were recruited, the cockade was a black one, and at the end the girl claims she is forsaken for The Scarlet and the Blue.

The song has obviously been rewritten many times for different regions and regiments.
