I would have thought that the idea was to entice people without a previous interest in folk music into folk clubs by presenting a selection of good quality pro and semi-pro performers.

Certainly for me the interest in hardcore trad only came after I had started going to folk clubs. I would never have made the jump from Pink Floyd to Fred Jordan in one go.
