Thread Name: Strange musical discoveries
Subject: RE: Strange musical discoveries
Maybe not a strange musical discovery, but certainly a good one - learning music like a child learns to speak. Erik Hoffman posted this to San Francisco's Harmony List:Victor Wooten, virtuoso bass player, gave a TED talk on Music as a language. It’s beautiful how he describes growing up in a musical family, and got to learn music by being included as a member from, as he describes it, beginning in the womb. Though many—most?—of us start later in life, the idea that learning an instrument as a voice where “goo-goo,” and, “gah-gah,” and, “mummy,” and, “da-da,” are expected at the beginning of the voyage is so validating. I’ve been describing it similarly by my theory of music: It’s organized noise. Thus learning the sounds of an instrument and combining sounds we like or combinations we hear bring us joy. Mr. Wooten has given me some new insights on this, which I look forward to using.

So, Start Playing! Turn practice into play. Enjoy the sounds of your instruments as you develop the ability to articulate the music-speak in ways the please both your ears as well as those listening and playing with you.
Cheers,
~Erik (Hoffman)
