Ceasar made the imperial outline for dictatorship but I see more American parrallels with 1920's Hitler culminating in suppressing all other traitorous political parties and attacking all of the 'enemy of the people' journalists except for Nazi propoganda. By the end of the 20's Adolf had a third of the members of Congress from the Nazi party.

Then convienient deaths did the rest.
