It's not scarey in the "kids halloween" style, but for grim reality of the "good old days" I don't think you can do better than "Long Lankin". There is a version in the database, but it omits the first n verses where Long Lankin's baby is walled up alive in the castle walls as an offering to the Gods.

This was a well documented practice, though in most recorded instances the sacrifice was not human.

I'll try and find the fuller version, but it may take some time, I still havent got around to indexing all my old tapes.
