I seem not to have responded to Q's query, 25 Apr 06. The citation in the OED (1969) is "S. Greenlee _Spook Who sat by Door_ x .83 They knew the doo-waps, rock and roll, rhythm and blues." The definition says "usu. performed acapella of with little instrumental accompaniment".
