I've come to think of my instruments as functional works of art and keep almost all of them out where I can see them and pick one up if I have a notion. My efforts to "thin the herd" don't often work because after I clean and restring the instrument I'm usually reminded why I acquired it in the first place and decide to play it "just a while longer" until I'm sure I want to get rid of it. Btw, keeping your instruments out can cause your strings to get mungy as you guys know but I wipe them down after playing and every so often apply some Ducks Ax Wax which increases string life and lubricates the fingerboards.
