The papers and TV over here are full of reminiscences of the festival that took place 50 years ago this weekend. What is more interesting than the nostalgia is this:

Woodstock was the phenomenon that changed the establishment's reaction to the counterculture of the `60s. Just the year before, they had been cracking heads at the Chicago Democratic convention, but Woodstock caused them to say "this is too big to squash, it needs to be subverted." So began the long journey to co-opt, corrupt, and commercialize our ideals.
