Hobos Ditched On The Gila Monster Route (Larry W. Jones 07/07/2008) (song#5536)

The setting sun shone across the plain
Lit the rear door of an east bound train
And gleamed on a rusty track close by
Where hobos sat on a rotten tie

They were ditched by a shack in cruel fate
High-balled by the bull on their last freight
The freight hit the line on a sanded rail
When they pulled on out behind the mail

Their train pulled away in the dark night
All they could see was the red tail light
The moon arose and the stars came out
Hobos ditched on the Gila Monster Route

Not a thing in sight but sand and space
No place for hobos to feed their face
No railyard shack for to rest their legs
No hen house where hobos steal their eggs

As they gazed out in the solitude
Both dropped their heads and began to brood
One spoke of the time he lost his mate
In a hobo jungle o’re a dinner plate

They both looked around and at their feet
A salamander they speared to eat
Hobos deprived of their daily bread
Cleared their dry throats with some Dago Red

Their train pulled away in the dark night
All they could see was the red tail light
The moon arose and the stars came out
Hobos ditched on the Gila Monster Route
