"However the sea was so shallow you had to go about 100 yards out to be waist height" ... that is one of the few things I haven't liked about Italy - in Ostia (near Rome) they have created a kind of artificial lagoon with a long groyne (not ****) running parallel with the shore but, whilst nice and still, it was too shallow to swim in.
