Playing a bit does toughen the finger ends, just felt mine. Overdoing it harms them but no playing lets them get soft. Play a bit every day up to Saturday but not too much.
Coating with glue I've not tried as there'd be a new feel to get used to, also I pull notes with those left fingers.
