I always asked myself three questions before buying stuff that had taken my fancy:

1) Do I really need it, or can I get by without it?
2) Can I afford it?
3) Have I got somewhere to keep it?

To go ahead with the purchase three yesses were necessary whilst I was married, thereafter two sufficed.
