All right, no wonder I felt confused.
At the site itself, there is no such confusion.
But we Westerners have been mistaken or have misled ourselves
for several centuries about the name and the thing named.


Band-i-Amir   means "the dam [built by] the Amir."
Amir is an office, not the name of a particular person.
The dam was built on the river Araxes.
It is the sort of dam which does two things:
1) provides a bridge by which traffic crosses the river
2) creates a reservoir out of the river
