Jack: why would you say that Austen's characters would never have encountered English folk music? Not saying you're wrong, just wondering - particularly as one of her characters does reference 'that old song about the maid who lives in the garrett' (paraphrasing)? I would be surprised if Jane Austen didn't hear as much folk music as she did Mozart, et al ... ?
