Peter B. Even his biographer and greatest supporter William Walker had to admit that he 'eked' out his versions. The only question is to what extent did he do this. My own opinion is that his eking went to the lengths of wholesale composition of ballads in some cases and Professor Child slates his versions mercilessly using phrases like 'nauseating repetition'.
