Thread Name: Lyr Add: Pat of Mullingar/The Man from Mullingar
Subject: RE: ADD: Pat of Mullingar/The Man from Mullingar^^^
I got it from Tom Munnelly who was the only one I ever heard singing it; I think it must have been one he collected so the original is housed at UCD - I have his index; I'll check later, if that's what you want to know
I may have a recording of him singing it is a session, if that would be of any use - I occasionally sing it in local sessions
It's obviously one of the anti-recruiting songs that were made to oppose one of the many Colonial Wars the Irish took part in
The most famous of these was 'Patrick Sheehan' or 'The Glens of Aherlow', composed to persuade the Irish nt to fight in the Crimean War (1854-55) by Republican pamphleteer and author, Charles Kickham
Kickham saw a blind soldier begging on the streets of Dublin, found out he had been blinded in the battle of Sevastpol and had been pensioned out of the army; he was reduced to begging when his pension ran out
The author decided to write a protest ballad in broadside form - it quickly became so popular that the British Government were forced to change their military pension rules
This and 'Mullingar' were one of many such ballads

Don't know if this is what you are looking for Joe - I might have a recording of Tom or someone singing it, if it's any use - it's not sung around by many people in my experience
