The 17-year Brood XI cicadas
may have been widespread once; after all,
in areas of the US that have been thoroughly deforested and plowed,
with everything from harvesting to building and urbanizing,
underground broods of cicadas have been literally uprooted.

on the map looks like the mountains -- Appalachian Mountains.
