Schizophrenia is an exhausting painful disease. Edgar Cayce died in 1945. If you suspected the spiritualists of removing medication or deluding your friend further they could be tried at minimum for negligent homocide or manslaugter. I found that only medication had a positive effect for schizophrenia. A scientific non religious application of hypnosis is minimaly effective if at all.
