Thread Name: Lyr Req: Down in Demerara
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Down in Demerara
Back in the days before wireless (TV wasn't even science fiction), family entertainment included getting round the piano for a sing-song. I have in my possession a note-book, older than I am, containing songs my family used to sing. "Alabam'" is one of them. A lot of the songs in the book also appeared in Community Singing books of the time (between the wars). Wouldn't be surprised if some of them originated in the Minstrel shows.

My old masterum, he owned a hosseum,
He owned a hosseum,
    He owned a hosseum,
My old masterum, he owned a hosseum,
Down in Alabam'

So here we sit like birds in the wilderness, birds in the wilderness (etc.)

2 This old hosseum, he broke his leggeum...

3 My old masterum, he sent for the doctorum...

4 This old doctorum, he couldn't affect a cureum...

5 This old hosseum, he died of his leggeum…

Incidentally, with these unconventional spellings being flagged up all over the place, it's a job to spot the real typos...
