I find that despite what the potted local histories and geographies say it looks like at the end of the 19th century about 15% of mills south of Rossendale still had looms as well as spindles and north of Rossendale it was the other way round.

So I guess that during the cotton famine the mechanical loom could have been more widespread than it was in the 1950s
