Well, Jos, my favourite pretentious Latinism is "post hoc ergo propter hoc," which refers to that well-known logical fallacy that says that something that happened after an event must have happened because of that event.

"Prior to" can ALWAYS be replaced with good old "before." "Albeit" (which almost died out, deservedly, over a hundred years ago but which has undergone a puzzling renaissance in recent years) can ALWAYS be replaced with good old "though" or "although." See, you've got ME shouting now...
