Thread Name: Origin: Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabella
Subject: RE: Origin: Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabella
And, inspired by the Saboly lyric (thanks to Monique for the translation!), I've adapted elements of Saboly, Blemont, and Nunn freely to create an English lyric that tells the tale more as Saboly did--ending with the "But we can't wake the Baby!" idea:

“Bring a torch, Jeannette, Isabella!
Bring a torch, to the stable run!”
“There is Jesus, good folk of the village!
Christ is born, and Mary’s calling.
Ah! Ah! Beautiful is the mother;
Ah! Ah! Beautiful is her Son!”

“Quickly, come to see the Virgin!
Quickly, come, you shepherd boys!
Never did I see baby sweeter,
Eyes shining brighter than the Day Star.
Run, run! Christopher! Won’t you jump up!
Run, run! These are the rarest joys!”

“Who goes there? Who is knocking so loudly?
Who is there? Who is crying so clear?”
“Us, the neighbors, all of the children--
Cakes for us all, let’s have a party!
Knock, knock! Open the door, we’re waiting!
Knock, knock! My, it is good we’re here!”

“It’s a sin, while the baby is sleeping,
It’s a sin, to talk so loud!”
“Quiet, now, as all of us gather;
Let’s not make noise to waken Jesus!
Hush, hush! Shepherds, now, be polite there!
Hush, hush--He’s sleeping despite the crowd.”

I plan to perform this new version on the 19th--virtually, of course, and probably via video recording, allowing for more of a band arrangement, not a live stream. Watch Youtube for it to show up...
