I walk these city streets
And I’m hurting to my feet
Teardrops sparkle in the neon glare
It’s not my heart that takes the knocks
I’m hurting in my socks
And the hurting’s working slowly up from there

But I’m gonna buy some red leather shoes
I’m gonna walk these lonely streets in style
My face ain’t the kind of face they welcome in this place
But my red leather shoes gonna make ‘em smile

By the church they fixed s sign
It says “The Lord’s A Friend Of Mine”
I stopped in there and knelt down for a time
I didn’t go there to be blessed
Just to give my feet a rest
And though I didn’t find a friend I found a diamond

So I’m gonna buy some red leather shoes
I’m gonna walk these lonely streets in style
My face ain’t the kind of face they welcome in this place
But my red leather shoes gonna make ‘em smile

I knew when I hit town
I’d hear no “Come on round”
I knew these streets could make a boy so sad
I knew these city folk
Could treat you like a joke
But I never knew my feet could hurt this bad
