by HMS Unicorn Wed, 14 July 2021 19:00 – 20:00 BST

Join HMS Unicorn to hear all about the songs and traditions of sea shanties with special guest speaker Professor Gerry Smyth.
About this event

HMS Unicorn is very pleased to welcome Professor Gerry Smyth to speak about his new book, “Sailor Song: The Shanties and Ballads of the High Seas”.

Professor Smyth of Liverpool John Moores University will be speaking about the classic 19th century shanty tradition and revealing some of the history and meanings behind different sea songs.

“Sailor Song: The Shanties and Ballads of the High Seas” (Jan 2021) is published by the British Library and is now available to purchase.

Originally from Dublin, Gerry Smyth is Professor of Irish Cultural History at Liverpool John Moores University, where he has published widely on the subjects of literary history and popular music. He is also a musician, actor, playwright, and environmental activist.

Sign up online and we will send you a Zoom link to join us on Wednesday 14th July at 7pm.

HMS Unicorn is providing this talk free of charge, but our work is only made possible through your support. To donate to HMS Unicorn and the Unicorn Preservation Society, please head to www.justgiving.com/hmsunicorn.

[talks about songs are usually illustrated with some singing, so I hope that will be the case in this instance]
