The 1899 text appeared four years earlier in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers Journal (Nov., 1895), p. 959, sent in August from San Antonio, as copied from the San Antonio Daily Express.

It was followed by "Texas a Paradise," credited to the same anonymous author.

Phoenix Weekly Herald (Apr. 27, 1899), p. 3:

"TEXAS PICNIC - LONE STAR STATE CITIZENS CELEBRATE SAN JACINTO DAY

"...Fred White recited two poems, one on 'Hell in Texas,' the other, 'Texas a Paradise.' Both were written by W. E. Cook a well-known cattleman of Texas."
