Where I grew up in central England that line was always sung as “bugle hounds”. Foxhunts used hunting horns (also called hunting bugles) to rally the foxhounds, so “bugle hounds” makes perfect sense. This may only be a local interpretation of the song, but that subtle variation over geography and time is one of the great things about folk music.
