I see that the European temperature record has been broken at Siracusa in Sicily, provisionally 48.8C. We spent a week there in 2016, just over the bridge in Ortigia. Siracusa town is a workaday, dusty old place, but at the top of the town there's a stunning archeological park with both Greek and Roman amphitheatres, and much else.
