The words didn't really rhyme even 150 years ago, but "give gospel" still might have been a plausible euphemism for "give hell."

Yet "give gospel" in such a sense doesn't seem to exist. If it was common enough to be shortened to "goss," it should be in the OED. But it isn't.

The OED offers examples of "give goss" from 1840 to 1914. It notes that the origin is unknown.
