Large flagpoles seem to be the latest fashion in my village. Several have been erected recently, mostly by ex-servicemen. But opposite my house, a workman arrived and put in place a giant pole, then proceeded to hoist a huge Union Flag, but upside down! I hurried across and pointed out that this was a distress signal, and showed him how to put the broad white stripe at the top nearest the pole. He then hoisted below it a flag of St George (red cross on a white background) according to his instructions from the owners, who were out. I nearly fell over when he asked me, "Is this the Polish flag?" He seemed never to have heard of St George. Honestly, I knew this at the age of seven when in the Brownies! Tut tut eh?
