DTG:
I had an interesting conversation with an Englishman who was a school teacher on a hike in New Hampshire many years ago. He had been brought up in coal country in Bonnie England and was according to him one of the very few young people from his district to get a post secondary education after which he returned as a school teacher to the land of his youth. He had subsequently moved to the States and become a teacher in New England.

He had a take on English versus American attitudes. He felt the English regarded themselves as more acted upon than acting, as opposed to average Americans, who felt the opposite. He mentioned that it might explain American violence, particularly gun violence, in that the average American feels he/she has personal agency and is more likely to exercise it, whether appropriately or not.

I tended to go along with that as a reasonable theory, but this was long ago, and I have modified my view in the Age of Trmp: I think that Americans have become more responsive over time to appeals to fear and hate. The sense of agency may still be higher among Americans than Europeans and Asians, but cases have been more distorted and perverted.
