Grandfather's Clock (G)                 …Henry C Work (1876)

      1                      5                     1                   4
My grandfather's clock was too large for the shelf,
         1               5                  1      (5)
So it stood 90 years on the floor,
          1             5                   1                  4
It was larger by half than the old man himself,
                1                      5                   1
Though it weighed not a pennyweight more,

It was bought on the morn
          5                        1
of the day that he was born,
                               (2)                  5
And was always his treasure and pride,
          1             5       1                   4
But it stopped short, never to go again,
                1    5      1
When the old man died.

      1
90 years without slumbering….
his life seconds numbering…
          6m          5         1                   4
But it stopped, short, never to go again,
                1    5      1
When the old man died.

In watching its pendulum swing to and fro,
Many hours he had spent as a boy,
And in childhood and manhood the clock seemed to know,
And to share his both his sorrow and joy,
For it struck 24 when he entered at the door,
With a blushing and beautiful bride,
But it stopped...

It struck an alarm in the dead of the night,
An alarm that for years had been dumb,
And we knew that his spirit was planning its flight,
That his hour of departure had come,
Still the clock kept the time,
With a faint and muffled chime,
As we silently stood by his side,
But it stopped...
