Thread Name: Obit: Hector Gilchrist (1940-2022)
Subject: RE: Obit: Hector Gilchrist (1940-2022)
Hector was one of the founding residents of the Sing Out Folk Club in Crewe, Cheshire, in 1965, when he was working at Reaseheath Agricultural College in Nantwich. He brought quality singing of Scottish traditional songs when most of the other residents and floor singers were still getting to grips with the likes of This Land is Your Land (the first song sung at the club). Nothing wrong with This Land .. of course. But Hector's singing and that tenor voice were something else. By the time I landed up in Crewe in 1972, Hector had already moved away, but he returned for various anniversaries and always came to the club when he was in the area. And in more recent years, after the club folded, he came to reunions, including the annual between Christmas and New Year get together. I also met up with him every year at Sidmouth. A great singer, a great person. He will certainly be missed.
