SONG OF THE SEA

Down in the docklands, the high cranes they rattle
Stevedores bawling. It sounds good to me.
The sirens are wailin’ ‘n the bow horns (are joining)
The opening chords to the song of the sea

The sounds of the tugs with their hooters a-screaming
The tow rope let go and now we flow free
The calm steady throb of the engine below me
Adding a rhythm to the song of the sea

The big waves roll by with their high crowns a-foaming
The seagull is adding his cry plaintively
The sound of the wind as it roars thru the crosstrees
Adding a voice to the song of the sea

The fog clouds come rolling, the bow buoy is tolling
Out thru the stillness its grim harmony
As slowly we’re pushing a whispering bow wave
Bringing a pause to the song of the sea

Sometimes you’re she’s pitching or lazily rolling
Forever her timbers may creak wearily
When the sea calls the tune, then she’s bound to answer
She always danced to the song of the sea

A landfall we’ve made and the anchor chain rattled
The gangway is down and it’s goodbye from me
Now she called the tune, now I’ll sing the ending
