Hi Jon,
This is Roud 18830. Steve had this and 5 other separate songs all under Roud 60 'The Brisk Young Sailor' so I studied all versions and was able to identify 6 different oecotypes all worthy of a separate number. Most of the versions I have are either American or on broadsides. It is actually 2 ballads often printed on the same sheet
The Rambling Boy, FL 'I am a rake and a rambling boy'
Answer to the Rambling Boy, FL 'A squire's daughter near Auchnacloy'
The first verse of the second ballad has been collected in England but no more than that as far as I know.
Bert may have taken one of the English fragments with a tune and then added text from either the broadside or an American text. Who knows? Brian would probably find the source. Richie wanted to have 2 separate numbers for the 2 ballads, but I don't think this came to anything.
