(Herself's usually a gentle soul, but I've seen her catch fire from a standing start at two old biddies gossiping as they cycle along a narrow winding country road. Happily, she doesn't use her car as an offensive weapon.) Hearing a phone-answering robot produces similar hair-trigger nonlinearities in most people.

"Otherisation": a good word. I'll see you that, and raise you "particularism" (identifying oneself with a subgroup, rather than all of society) as its flip side. Mayhap it's all due to the shock of finding that other people don't have identical viewpoints to oneself.
