Thread Name: Concert Life and songs of Marina Russell
Subject: Concert Life and songs of Marina Russell
This is a once-in-a-lifetime concert and takes place on July 19th in the village of Upwey Dorset. There is a ticket link below, and I have copied the promo from the organizers. I understand tickets are flying out.
St Laurence Church, Upwey, Weymouth, DT3 5QE
Fri 19th July 2024

In 1907 the Hammond Brothers collected over 100 songs or song fragments from Marina Russell of Upwey, Dorset. This concert will feature many of those songs, intermingled with some of what is known about her life and times. Marina was born a Sartin. And the singing tradition has continued among the Sartins, with Bonny Sartin of the Yetties and through the late Paul Sartin (of Bellowhead and other bands) to his sons, Joe and Will. We are delighted that they'll be with us on the night, alongside Nick Dow who many years ago was encouraged to find out more about Marina Russell and her life. And the man who gave him that encouragement, Martin Carthy, will be with us too. St Laurence Church, Upwey, our usual venue, will be a fine setting for the songs of a woman who would have known the church well.
