It is well known to many/most English people that Scotland is in effect a part of England, and that we should be proud to be permitted as such. When I worked in Birmingham I experienced this attitude direct.
Members of my own extended family consider it absurd and foolish that some Scots want independence.
Mind you, in the USA I have encountered the belief that Scotland is an independent part of Ireland.
