I've been going through my 78s (a slow process -- there are about 500!) and came across one I must have bought sometime and never played: Layton & Johnston ("American duettists, with piano") singing -- yes! -- "Are you lonesome tonight?"! I just had to see if it was the same song, and it was; but without the "all the world's a stage" nonsense in the middle. L&J were recording in the thirties and forties, and from the style of the disc, I'd say this was probably from their earlier days.

Yes, If I didn't know better, I'd have said Elvis's version was a parody!
