Find more details of the history of the person Thomas the Rhymer at https://tam-lin.org/library/thomas_text.html and https://faeryfolklorist.blogspot.com/2011/06/thomas-rhymer-melrose.html

You can visit the site of the Eilden tree outside Melrose on the slope of the Eilden Hills. From there, Thomas the Rhymer was taken to Elfland by the Queen of the Faeries. He returned three years later, though it only seemed like three days to him. Now he could only speak the truth and was known as True Thomas.

Sir Walter Scott, who built his Abbotsford mansion nearby, expanded the ballad into three parts, adding a sequel which incorporated the prophecies ascribed to Thomas, and an epilogue where Thomas is summoned back to Elfland after the appearance of a sign, in the form of the milk-white hart and hind.

Thomas predicted that a bridge over the River Tweed would one day be visible from the Eildon Tree. In 1865 the impressive Leaderfoot Viaduct opened, carrying the Berwickshire Railway over the River Tweed. Because of its height the viaduct can be seen from the viewpoint close to the Rhymer's Stone apparently proving Thomas the Rhymer's prediction correct.
