Subject: RE: lyric discussion: Thomas The Rhymer
I've enjoyed this thread. I grew up in California and Oregon. California's history consists of natives who harvested nuts, Spanish friars who came in and taught them - how to work (in the mission orchards and fields), Americans who came in and discovered gold, mined it, drank and gambled, seized control from the Spaniards/Mexicans; and a certain politician who became President and was caught trying to rig the election. Oh, and industries that moved in, like aircraft, movies, rock & roll, and electronics.

Oregon's history consists of more natives, and Lewis & Clark who paddled their canoes up the river, down the other side to Oregon, stayed the winter, paddled back. They built a fort, but it disappeared - we don't even know where it was.

You people across the pond have history going back who knows how far. Romans, Angles, Celts, Normans, Vikings, wars, kings, religions, monasteries, Bible translations, burnings of heretics, revolutions, invasions, riots, coal mines, pirates, armies, navies, pubs, knights, Merlin, dragons, leprechauns, castles, old songs, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton; and a few miles away, all of Europe with lots and lots more history and tradition. I wonder how you could even learn all the different stuff.

So carry on. I wouldn't be able to influence this discussion for better or worse. Except that a "cel" is an old thing they used to use in movies - a transparent sheet you can use to paint cartoon characters on and superimpose them, so an actor can talk to Bugs Bunny. An "eel" is a sort of underwater snake. In case anybody didn't know.
