There was nothing inherently offensive about the term "hog eye." It appears hundreds of times in nineteenth-century papers - sometimes in reference to a "hog-eyed man" and in many cases as the name of a town (notably in Texas).

If barges were known as "hog-eyes" we'd know it from more people than Whall.
